Spain is top international destination from Cardiff
06/03/2008
Spain remains a popular destination for Cardiff Airport passengers travelling on international flights, according to the Western Mail.
The newspaper reported that statistics produced by the Welsh Assembly Government indicated the country's continued dominance of the airport's international business.
It was revealed by the figures that out of the 1.6 million international passengers handled by Cardiff Airport in 2006, half travelled to or from Spain and the Canary Islands.
The statistics also showed that there was a decline in charter flights to Spain that year, but these were replaced by scheduled flights.
Noting that Spain also dominated other UK airports, Peter Phillips, head of marketing at Cardiff Airport, commented: "Low-cost airlines are going further now. When they started off, they were only going to Paris and Amsterdam."
Flights from Cardiff Airport to Bulgaria have seen an increase in popularity in recent years, carrying 24,731 passengers in 2006.
