Business as usual for Humberside Airport as winds batter the region
07/07/2008
A total of around 3,000 homes went without power recently as unusually high winds caused havoc throughout the Humberside region.
The main problem was found to be trees falling on overhead power cables.
But Humberside International Airport at Kirmington, North Lincolnshire, reported no disruption to services.
CE Electric supplies power to the region from the north-east to parts of Yorkshire.
Spokesman for the company, Pete Carr said: "Emergency teams are on the ground carrying out repairs to damaged overhead power lines.
Met Office forecaster, Dave Elliott said: "East Yorkshire saw gusts of up to 55mph.
"This is fairly common in winter, but it is unusual to get that kind of speed at this time of year.
"The problem lies in the fact that trees are covered in leaves during summer, so there is a much bigger surface area for the wind to hit."
It is testament to Humberside Airport that operations simply carried on as normal and is made all the more impressive by the fact that the world famous Humber Bridge had to close to high sided vehicles for a short while after 15:00 GMT.
