MPs to pressure gov't over Durham Airport

MPs to pressure gov't over Durham AirportMPs in the north-east are today expected to pressure the government into protecting the area's airport.

According to the Northern Echo, aviation minister Jim Fitzpatrick will be encouraged to combat new landing charges that have caused some airlines to cancel flights from Durham Tees Valley Airport.

Frank Cook, MP for Stockton North, told the publication: "There is a huge amount at stake - links to London and the global air network are vital for many of our most important companies on Teesside."

Another MP emphasised the need to preserve landing slots for domestic flights at London's airports.

Cheap airline bmi recently announced that it would cut its services from Durham Tees Valley Airport to London Heathrow after increased landing costs.

The airport is currently pursuing a legal case against the carrier, alleging a breach of contract relating to the withdrawal, it has been reported.
