Norwich to Newcastle flight under considerationA new route between Norwich and Newcastle Airport could be in the pipeline, it has been revealed.

Elliott Summers, managing director of Norwich International Airport, told the Norwich Evening News that the new flights could be introduced due to the leisure and industry appeal of Newcastle.

Mr Summers told the newspaper: "We are working with Newcastle Airport on a potential route there on the back of the North Sea oil and gas industry, whilst also identifying the destination as a place of considerable leisure interest."

"I can testify its merits based on first-hand experience and several subsequent hangovers," he added.

Newcastle Airport currently offers flights to almost 100 international destinations including Rome, Faro, Malta, Zante, Thessalonika and Malaga.

A £27 million extension of the facility was opened by former prime minister Tony Blair in October 2000 and it now serves around five million passengers per year.
