BA to cancel New York flight link from Gatwick
07/06/2009
British Airways (BA) will cancel a 25-year old route from Gatwick Airport to the US, it has been revealed.
It was announced that, from October 25th, the carrier will no longer run flights from the London hub to New York Newark airport.
The news comes after Virgin Atlantic cancelled its trans-Atlantic services after many years.
BA is expected to use the old flight slots to offer new routes to Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt and Male in the Maldives.
Richard Tams, BA head of UK and Ireland sales, said: "We're particularly pleased to be serving a completely new destination, the Maldives, and returning to Sharm El Sheikh. We expect both routes to perform well."
Rival carrier Jet2 also recently announced the launch of a new service to Sharm El Sheikh from Newcastle Airport.
Set to run once weekly from October 17th, the service will cost around £89.99, including tax and charges.
