Manchester Airport rolls out recycling zone scheme
09/06/2009
Manchester Airport has become the first in the UK to offer recycling zones in its terminals.
The £80 million initiative is being implemented in conjunction with Coca Cola and the Waste and Resources Action Programme over a three-year period.
It is hoped that over 100 recycling bins will encourage the travel hub's 22 million annual passengers to save their waste from landfill sites.
Manchester Airport head of environment Tim Walmsley said: "The scheme assists us in helping to improve the customer experience for our passengers and we are confident they will be making full use of these facilities.
"This is one measure in a range that we're rolling out to deal with the thousands of tonnes of waste we collect on site."
It is thought that 350 tonnes of liquid ban plastic packages alone could be recycled each year as part of the plan.
Meanwhile, US first lady Michelle Obama and her two daughters have paid a visit to Stansted Airport.
Flying in from France after the 65th anniversary of D-Day, the trio visited several famous London landmarks after landing at the Essex travel hub yesterday (June 8th).
