Bristol Airport submits expansion plansPlans to expand Bristol International Airport have been submitted to North Somerset Council.

The £340 million project proposes the doubling of the existing airport terminal and new aircraft stands.

It is thought that the scheme could create as many as 3,500 jobs and boost passenger numbers to ten million by 2016 if given the green light by authorities.

Robert Sinclair, chief executive of Bristol International Airport, said that the final application "strikes the right balance between allowing the sustainable development of the airport to meet the long-term demand for air travel to and from this region, while also reducing and mitigating the environmental effects".

Mr Sinclair added that caps on night flights and noise restrictions could be imposed to reduce the travel hub's impact on the surrounding area.

In other news, a new walkway at Aberdeen Airport was opened by Scottish transport minister Stewart Stevenson on Monday (June 15th).

The £2.3 million extension to the main terminal building has created covered corridors for passengers arriving at and departing from the airport.
