UK airports join European carbon accreditation scheme
17/06/2009
More than 30 European airports have joined a programme that could see them labelled as carbon credited.
Airport trade body ACI Europe has announced that it will begin its heralded Airport Carbon Accreditation scheme, geared towards recognising the efforts of industry leaders to cut CO2 emissions and improve energy efficiency.
Some 31 airports including Manchester, East Midlands, Humberside and Dublin have voluntarily signed up for the initiative.
Olivier Jankovec, ACI Europe director general said: "Until now there hasn't been a common framework for mapping and reducing carbon emissions on the airport site, which is a uniquely complicated space.
"The 31 airports signing up today to Airport Carbon Accreditation account for 26 per cent of passenger traffic in Europe - no small beginning."
In other airport news, bosses at Bristol International Airport have submitted expansion plans to North Somerset Council.
The £340 million project proposes the doubling of the existing airport terminal and the construction of new aircraft stands with a view to boosting passenger numbers to ten million by 2016.
