Edinburgh Airport expansion "will be considerable"The multi-million pound upgrade of Edinburgh Airport is proceeding well, it has been reported.

A larger departure lounge and extra shopping outlets will be a main feature of the £40 million, 5,000 sq m development.

Edinburgh Airport managing director Gordon Dewar commented: "We are delighted with the progress we are making. Passengers will be able to enjoy the new look Edinburgh Airport within a matter of months. The transformation will be considerable."

Mr Dewar added that the changes would help Edinburgh Airport compete with top European travel hubs.

Scottish secretary Jim Murphy MP performed the topping out ceremony on behalf of Balfour Beatty last week (June 18th).

Edinburgh Airport currently serves around eight million travellers each year, a figure that is likely to rise once its expansion is fully completed in 2011.

In related news, the airport is expecting heavy traffic in the Ingliston area due to the Royal Highland Show, which begins on Thursday (June 25th).
