Glasgow witnesses tourism boost
24/06/2009
Glasgow Airport witnessed an increase in tourist travel in May, compared with the same time last year.
According to statistics from Glasgow City Marketing Bureau (GCMB), hotel occupancy in the city rose to 77 per cent, a four per cent leap on 2008 figures and the highest May figure for over ten years.
Scott Taylor, GCMB chief executive, said: "These figures prove that Glasgow continues to be seen throughout the world as an attractive short break destination, as well as a top-class location for major sporting events, conferences and exhibitions."
The bureau reports that the three-day Association of Surgeons conference at the SECC brought 1,200 business leaders to the Scottish city, while the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships and the Gymnastics Grand Prix also attracted many new visitors.
Some 30 airlines offer routes to 90 international destinations from Glasgow Airport.
Around eight million passengers use to travel hub each year, its website reports.
