Thomson launches plastic traveller's chequesThomson has launched a new initiative designed to bring the traveller's cheque into the 21st century.

The carrier's plastic traveller's cheques can be loaded with various currencies and then used like debit cards in shops and at cash machines.

According to the airline, which runs flights from 20 UK airports including Newcastle, Humberside and Birmingham, research from Mintel indicates that 20 per cent of travellers "feel safer" carrying a card rather than cash when abroad.

Pete Constanti, chief executive officer of mainstream travel at the firm, commented: "Thomas Cook is the expert in providing holiday money solutions so we are constantly looking at developing new and convenient currency solutions for our customers.

"Following the success of our existing Cash Passport cards, we're expecting our new versions to be a huge hit with travellers."

The boss added that the cards are perfect for gap year travellers, since a second card can be kept at home for parents to top up with.

Meanwhile, budget carrier Wizz Air has launched its first flight from Liverpool John Lennon Airport to Prague.

The low cost operator will run three flights each week to the Czech Republic capital on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
