Domestic holidays could boost use of regional airports, figures indicate
Domestic airports such as East Midlands, Leeds-Bradford and Exeter could benefit from Brits' travelling habits during the recession.
According to figures from Sainsbury's Travel Insurance, some 19.8 million Brits will be holidaying at home this year due to financial constraints.
Some 63 per cent of respondents said they would stay on home turf to save cash, while 19 per cent said they would not go on holiday at all.
Sam Marrs, Sainsbury's Travel Insurance manager, commented: "With a significant number of us still intending to get away this summer, holidaymakers are taking a range of measures to reduce their holiday spend, holidaying in the UK instead of abroad being the main one."
The statistics indicate that the East Midlands, Yorkshire and Humberside regions have the highest percentage of Brits remaining in the country, a fact that could lead to a boost in operations at airports such as Leeds-Bradford and East Midlands.
In other news, holiday operator Teleticket Scotland has announced it will offer all passengers who were on its inaugural flight from Glasgow to Tenerife on Sunday (July 26th) ten per cent off another flight or holiday this October.
