Liverpool John Lennon Airport to expand under £12m plan?Liverpool John Lennon Airport could be earmarked for a multi-million pound expansion, it has been revealed.

Owner Peel Airport has released images that depict the £12 million planned work, which will see security facilities made more efficient and retail space doubled at the travel hub.

The new security suite is expected to be built on the third floor of an existing hangar.

Airport spokesman Robin Tudor told the Liverpool Echo: "We recognise security can be a bottleneck at peak times and has been for some time.

"There are pinch points in the early morning as jets try to get away, so we need more space."

Mr Tudor added that having passed through the new security facility, passengers will enter a walk-through duty free area where the restaurant is currently located.

It is thought the work could take up to a year and may see Liverpool John Lennon Airport's retail space increased by 45 per cent (80,000 sq ft).

Meanwhile, baggage handlers at the airport recently went on strike over compulsory redundancies.

The industrial action ended on September 2nd after the GMB union came to a deal with employer Servisair through peacemaker Acas.
