Birmingham Airport receives Carbon Trust Standard

Birmingham Airport receives Carbon Trust StandardBy James Wilson.

Birmingham International Airport has been recognised for its carbon reduction with the Carbon Trust Standard.

The travel hub has reduced its emissions by four per cent since April 2006 despite various expansions to its facilities.

It was achieved through the use of new technology and the improvement of staff awareness.

Birmingham Airport chief executive Paul Kehoe commented: "In the current economic climate it is essential that we remain competitive and the Carbon Trust Standard is another way we can stay ahead of the game and communicate our environmental credentials to those that matter."

Mr Kehoe added that the airport uses enough energy to power 700 residential buildings each year.

The airport is among 125 other companies in the UK that have achieved the Carbon Trust Standard.

Work began on a £45 million state-of-the-art extension of Birmingham Airport's terminal one in June 2007, including a 240 metre, three-storey structure to accommodate departing passengers, office workers and handling agents.

Some 9.6 million passengers used to airport in 2008.
