Manchester wins Travel Trade Gazette airport of the yearBy Jeremy Price.

Manchester Airport has been named airport of the year at an award ceremony, it has been reported.

The Travel Trade Gazette Awards see airports judged on customer service, innovation, facilities, investment, trade relations, environmental performance, business strategy and community commitment.

Manchester rose above competition from Southampton, Birmingham and London Luton airports to take the top spot.

Andrew Cornish, managing director, who received the award on behalf of the airport, said: "We are extremely proud to have secured such a highly acclaimed award, which is a real tribute to the efforts of the 19,000 people who work at Manchester Airport."

Mr Cornish added that the award recognises the "unrivalled experience" provided for passengers by the airport's staff.

The air hub recently invested £80 million in redeveloping its terminal buildings and £25 million in improving its security facilities.

In related news, SkyEurope Airlines announced the suspension of its operations on September 1st, affected two routes from Manchester to Kosice and Bratislava.

Passengers due to travel with the airline were advised to get in contact via its website.
