Stansted Airport is gearing up for the environmental challenges of the 21st century, it has been claimed at a local meeting.

The Airport Operators Association regional conference saw representatives of the airport, local authorities, business heads and MEPs gather at Stansted's Radisson Hotel to discuss the travel hub's strategy for the near future.

It was revealed that the airport is looking to boost its environmental credentials.

Dr Andy Jefferson, head of environment at Stansted, said: "Stansted is proud to be the largest UK airport to hold the coveted ISO14001 certification, a status we have held since 2005."

He added that a wood chip biomass boiler "has already helped us reduce gas consumption at the airport by over 40 per cent".

Other speakers emphasised the need to keep up with changing environmental schemes in order to reduce emissions and cut costs.

The Airport Operators Association is made up of 72 airports and 160 companies.
