Trainspotters rally support for Teesside Airport station
14/10/2009
A special trip organised by railway enthusiasts aims to publicise one of the UK's most underused train stations, it has been reported.
According to the Northern Echo, only one train a week stops at Teesside Airport station and only 52 passengers alighted there last year.
The visit's organiser Alex Nelson, stationmaster at independent Chester-le-Street station, hopes to draw rail bosses' attention to the fact air passengers need a more frequent service.
"I thought if we can get 50 people to get on the train there, then their tickets will be recorded and hopefully the passenger numbers will considerably increase," he told the newspaper.
He added: "It will also help to publicise how ridiculous it is that one of the regions major airports doesnt have a rail connection that's useful."
Teesside Airport was renamed Durham Tees Valley Airport in 2004, but the station's name was not altered.
