Call to cap Bristol Airport passenger numbers
15/10/2009
According to the Weston & Somerset Mercury, local people from North Somerset have urged the nearby airport to cap passenger numbers.
The statement is believed to have been made at a meeting of North Somerset council's planning committee last week, during discussions about plans to extend the airport.
Robert Sinclair, BIA's chief executive officer, told residents and councillors it hoped to eventually serve ten million passengers.
He added that expansion would allow the firm to provide additional services to local people, such as environmental initiatives and investment in transport infrastructure.
North Somerset councillor for Blackwell, Tom Collinson, argued that BIA's proposals fail to meet government guidelines, such as CO2 emission targets.
Consultation is already underway on the airport's Draft Noise Reduction Plan, which BIA hopes will reduce the effects of flights on surrounding communities.
