Prices start at £28.99 one way and £56.98 return, including tax and charges.

Robin Tudor, Peel Airports head of PR, said: "[Malta] is an island with tremendous history and culture and easyJet's latest addition to their services from here will give the region's passengers more destinations to choose from at Liverpool John Lennon Airport."

Trevor Spinks of easyJet added the company is "committed" to providing services to the Merseyside region and could be looking to expand its operations further in the future.

EasyJet operates at a number of UK airports, including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Bristol, East Midlands and Luton.
