Flybe criticises Belfast Airport runway expansion planBy Sam Lock.

Plans to expand the runway at Belfast Airport should be shelved, it has been claimed.

According to Flybe chief commercial officer Mike Rutter, the move would make the facility busier and less efficient, which in turn could put off travellers.

Mr Rutter observed that many business passengers use Belfast Airport, meaning the expansion could have negative economic effects.

The chief commercial officer said: "We believe the runway extension will change fundamentally the character of the airport, which will make it less attractive for people to come and visit Belfast as a place to do business.

"That will affect inward investment into Northern Ireland, which is critical to regenerate the economy."

Flybe currently operates 14 flights from Belfast Airport to destinations such as Aberdeen, Exeter and Glasgow.

Meanwhile, the first phase of a £6 million redevelopment of the airport was completed last month (November).

Retail space at the facility will be increased by 60 per cent once the enhancements are complete.
