Flight delays caused by fog at Glasgow and Edinburgh airports
14/12/2009
Glasgow and Edinburgh airports were plagued by extensive delays on Friday afternoon (December 11th) as fog descended onto both cities.
Prestwick Airport had taken ten diversions by mid-afternoon, while the airport also handled additional flights from locations including Southampton, Kirkwall and Liverpool, reports the BBC.
The temperature fell below freezing and visibility reached just 200 metres, according to Gail McGrane, a BBC weather forecaster, while fog in other UK cities including London also impacted flights leaving Edinburgh.
Ms McGrane told the BBC: "The winds are slack so nothing is pushing it through in that area and because the sun goes down so soon at this time of year the fog won't disappear for long this afternoon before it forms again."
Long queues were reported at Edinburgh Airport as many passengers sought to change their flight details.
In other news, the Conservatives could lift a moratorium on the expansion of Heathrow as a new study claims the development would not breach emissions guidelines, reports the Guardian.
