Low-cost airline Ryanair has announced new services from Portugal to 14 destinations, including Birmingham Airport.

The carrier is set to create 150 jobs by making Faro its 39th travel base in March 2010, it has revealed.

A $200 million (£124 million) investment in the hub will see it host 200 weekly flights, with 14 new routes to places such as Birmingham, Derry, Knock, Marseille, Milan, Oslo and Stockholm.

Michael O'Leary of Ryanair said: "Portuguese consumers and visitors can beat the recession by choosing Ryanair's lowest fares and our no fuel surcharge guarantee on 28 exciting destinations all over Europe including France, Italy and Germany."

The airline expects to support 1,300 local jobs at the airport.

Its service to Birmingham Airport will launch on March 28th 2010.

Celebrating the news, the carrier released 500,000 seats priced at €5 for travel on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays on over 500 routes across Europe.

Ryanair served some 40 million passengers in 2007, its website notes.
