Snowjet launches UK's only direct route to Sion
By Sam Lock.
The UK's first direct flight to Sion has begun operations.
Snowjet launched its first service to the sanctuary in the Swiss Alps on Saturday (December 19th) from London Stansted.
Some 75 passengers boarded the Bae146-200 aircraft for the first flight to the Swiss Valais region, popular among skiers and snowboarders alike.
Snowjet managing director David Lacy said: "Marcel Maurer, mayor of Sion, greeted the first flight on Saturday and expressed his delight at having direct services from London, which will benefit Swiss travellers as well as British winter-sports enthusiasts."
Mr Lacy added that flying directly to Sion from London was the quickest way to gain access to Swizerland's top snow retreats, such as Saas Fee, Crans Montana and Zermatt.
The new service is set to operate twice weekly on Saturdays and Sundays until April 18th 2010.
One-way tickets start at £29, while ski carriage is priced at £14.99.
Snowjet offers a free baggage allowance of 20kg for passengers on all its flights, while it also guarantees no fuel surcharges.
