Passengers stranded as Liverpool Airport shutsBy James Wilson.

Hundreds of passengers have been left at Liverpool John Lennon Airport after heavy snowfall forced the travel hub to shut.

EasyJet flights to Belfast City and Belfast International were cancelled yesterday evening (December 23rd) due to the weather, which caused Liverpool Airport to close until 23:00 GMT.

On top of this, five flights bound for the north-west hub were diverted to East Midlands Airport.

Airport spokesman Robin Tudor told the Liverpool Daily Post: "There were huge areas to clear, which is why staff worked into the night to make sure flights are landing at the airport.

"We're advising passengers to check with their airline what their plans are."

In related news, budget carrier Ryanair recently announced the return of services from Liverpool Airport to Fuerteventura as part of its summer 2010 schedule.

The flights will operate twice a week and are set to launch on March 31st 2010.

Ryanair added two extra aircraft to its Liverpool operation last month.
