Aer Lingus scales back Gatwick operation after 2009 lossesBy Nick Jones.

Irish carrier Aer Lingus has announced it will cut the volume of flights it runs from London Gatwick Airport.

The airline revealed it will cut the number of aircrafts it operates at Gatwick from five to three less than a year after it set up base at the airport.

It is thought the decision is financially motivated, as the carrier posted losses in excess of £100 million in 2009.

The changes will mean the operation of four routes by Aer Lingus from Gatwick to Knock, Dublin, Cork and Malaga.

According to Cheap Flights, the airline opened seven routes to Nice, Faro, Zurich, Vienna, Munich, Knock and Malaga in April last year, followed by additional services to Tenerife, Eindhoven, Bucharest, Lanzarote, Vilnius and Warsaw in June.

The carrier has also deferred the delivery of two new aircrafts from November 2010 to May 2011.

In related news, Aer Lingus is currently advising all passengers due to travel in the next few days to expect delays and potential cancellations due to extreme weather conditions.

Travellers can reschedule their booking online at no extra cost or apply for a full refund.
