Durham Tees Valley Airport to cut staff due to recessionBy Jeremy Price.

Durham Tees Valley Airport has announced it is streamlining its workforce due to the recession.

According to Peel Group Holdings, operator of the air hub, the facility must cut costs if it is to come out of the downturn in a strong position.

Some 32 employees are expected to lose their jobs, with the remaining 143 being re-trained in order to take on new responsibilities.

Peel Group Holdings director Kerry Quinn stated: "Regrettably, creating financial stability in the current economic situation does mean reducing our overall staff numbers, together with the introduction of greater flexibility through multi-skilling."

She added that the firm would collaborate with trade unions in order to carry out the streamlining "fairly and sensitively".

BMI Baby recently withdraw from Durham Tees Valley Airport, while Ryanair cut routes from the facility last year.

The airport serves around 700,000 passengers each year and is located four miles east of Darlington.
