Cardiff Airport 'could get £5m redesign'

By Nick Jones.
Cardiff Airport has released details of a £5 million redevelopment of its terminal building.
Part of a £15 million investment, the redesign includes an extension of the front of the terminal and new shopping and food outlets.
Bosses revealed the strategy has reached planning stage and could begin construction later this year.
The plan was delayed due to the economic downturn and will be approved or rejected by Vale councillors in the coming months.
Managing director Patrick Duffy emphasised that the move is not primarily intended to attract more passengers to the airport.
"Our intention is to enhance and expand the airport terminal, present a modern statement for the region and increase our commercial activities," he said.
Mr Duffy added that "the ultimate drivers of air traffic growth" at Cardiff Airport are airlines.
Around 1.7 million travellers passed through the facility in 2009, compared to 1.9 million in 2008, WalesOnline notes.
Cardiff Airport underwent a £7 million enhancement programme in 2006.
