Liverpool Airport optimistic in face of lossesBy Nick Jones.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport has recorded further losses but is still in a position to recover, bosses claim.

According to owner Peel Holdings, the airport saw pre-tax losses of £13.1 million in year leading up to March 2009, in comparison to £10.1 million the year before, the Liverpool Daily Post reports.

Passenger numbers fell by 7.5 per cent to around five million during the period, despite the launch of new services to Europe by Ryanair, easyJet and KLM.

In a statement to the newspaper, an airport spokesperson noted that a large proportion of the facility's debt was due to the construction of a new hotel and car park.

"The group is well-positioned to realise its future potential as the business comes out of the recession. Liverpool John Lennon Airport has already seen passenger growth in the past two consecutive months," the statement read.

Liverpool Airport is set to receive a £12 million expansion this autumn that will improve security and increase hangar space.

The airport is located next to the River Mersey and is one of the UK's longest established operational airports.
