Manchester flights diverted to Liverpool due to snowBy James Wilson.

Some 1,000 passengers were flown into Liverpool John Lennon Airport last night (February 3rd) after heavy snow forced workers at Manchester Airport to close its runway.

According to the Liverpool Echo, 11 flights arriving from destinations such as Edinburgh, Paris and Helsinki were diverted to Liverpool due to the one-and-a-half hour distruption.

In a statement made at 17:30 GMT officials were still advising travellers scheduled to fly to come to the airport.

A spokesman for Manchester Airport told the newspaper: "We had heavy snow fall very quickly and when that happens you have to wait for it to stop before you can start trying to clear it.

"We had to suspend operations at 16:15 GMT."

The snow has now been cleared but airport officials are still advising passengers to check with their airlines for the latest information on their service.

Some 22 million people pass through Manchester Airport each year.

It is the largest airport outside the capital and hosts services from more than 100 airlines.
