IBM to run self-service check-in for BmiBy Sam Lock.

Computer giant IBM has won a contract to deliver a self-service check-in system for UK carrier Bmi at a number of airports, the company has revealed.

The airline hopes to encourage more travellers to use self-service facilities with the IBM Self Service Check-In solution, which passengers can access on the internet or on their mobile phone.

IBM is now providing the service for Bmi flights travelling from Gatwick, Heathrow, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dublin and Manchester airports.

"Bmi's specially designed self-service check-in system combines intelligent technology and convenience into an innovative solution which allows the airline to meet the challenges of today's competitive market place," said Stuart Wilson of IBM global business services.

"Customer service is a major priority for airlines today," he added.

The IBM Self Service Check-In solution has so far been installed at 60 airports.

It will be supplemented by a kiosk at each airport that allows travellers to check-in quickly and easily.

Bmi is part of the Star Alliance, which runs an overall total of 16,500 daily flights to 912 destinations.
