Low-cost carrier Ryanair has announced plans to launch a new route from Edinburgh Airport this year.

The flights are the first to link Scotland with Marrakech in Morocco and will be serviced by a sixth Ryanair aircraft at Edinburgh.

Beginning in May, the route could bring more passengers to the airport and will be accompanied by an increase of frequency on nine existing routes.

Commenting on the news yesterday (February 10th), Edinburgh airport managing director Gordon Dewar said: "The addition of new routes and the increase in frequency of flights makes Edinburgh better connected than ever before."

"The Marrakech route is particularly exciting as it's the first link from Scotland to this burgeoning tourist destination," Mr Dewar added.

The carrier predicts the expansion will bring its annual passengers numbers up to 2.5 million per year at the airport.

Some 40 airlines currently offer flights to 100 international destinations from Edinburgh Airport.
