Business leaders have urged the new owners of Gatwick Airport to consider a new runway at the facility.
Sir David Rowlands, chairman of the airport, stated that he had "not a shred of interest" in establishing a second runway at Gatwick in a meeting with the Gatwick Area Conservation Campaign this week.
Speaking to the Crawley News, Jeremy Taylor of the Gatwick Diamond Business Association stated that although Sir David's decision was not surprising, the chairman should still consider proposals for an additional runway at the airport.
Mr Taylor told the newspaper that the move could benefit "many businesses" in the Gatwick region, "creating great opportunities" in Crawley and beyond.
"In the long term, a second runway is a good idea, especially when compared to the alternatives such as Heathrow and Stansted," he said.
However, he added the plan should not be considered until it has government backing.
Gatwick is currently the busiest single runway airport in the world and the eight largest in Europe.
