Charities are being urged to apply for funding from the Leeds Bradford International Airport foreign coin collection scheme, it has been reported.
According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, the airport donated a total of £8,000 to a number of charities in 2009 after passengers donated their unwanted foreign currency at the travel hub.
The scheme has been running for ten years and last year supported Sur Ryder, PhysCap and the Samaritans.
Speaking to the newspaper, PhysCap trustee Marshall Frieze praised travellers for their generosity throughout 2009: "We appreciate it's difficult to donate in the current economic climate but we are extremely grateful to all those who did."
She added that the donations received through the foreign coin initiative helped the organisation pay for equipment for physically disabled children in the region.
Charity bosses interested in applying for funding under the scheme should write to the airport and explain how the money would benefit their organisation in no more than 150 words.
Leeds Bradford International Airport offers flights to over 70 business and leisure destinations.
