A Yorkshire man has been charged for posting an airport bomb threat on social networking website Twitter, police have revealed.

Paul Chambers of Balby, Doncaster, allegedly made the joke via the micro-blogging site after the flight he intended to take from Robin Hood Airport last month was cancelled due to heavy snow.

The 26-year-old was arrested after the hoax was reported to the police and has been charged with sending a menacing message under the Communications Act 2003.

A spokesperson from South Yorkshire Police said: "A 26-year-old Doncaster man has been charged with sending by public communications network a message that was grossly offensive, or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character."

Police seized Mr Chambers' iPhone and computers as part of the investigation.

He will appear at Doncaster Magistrates' Court today (February 19th) and has also received a lifetime ban from Robin Hood Airport.

Mr Chambers is thought to be the first person in the UK to be arrested for a post made on Twitter, the Independent states.
