American Airlines will launch a new route from New York's John F Kennedy International Airport to Manchester later this year, it has announced.
Part of an expansion by the carrier that will also see new services link the US city with San Jose, Costa Rica and Madrid, the flights to Manchester will commence on May 13th and will be operated by a Boeing 757 aircraft.
The move brings the total number of American Airlines routes from New York to 31, nine of which serve European cities.
Andrew Stokes, chief executive of marketing at Manchester Airport, said: "Manchester offers people from the US the chance to experience not only our great city, but also the sights of the Lake District National Park, Liverpool and the Roman city of Chester."
Mr Stokes added that the route could also prove popular among business travellers attending exhibitions and conferences in Manchester and its environs.
The route will operate daily, leaving New York at 19:05 EST and arriving in Manchester at 07:55 GMT.
The Manchester Airports Group also includes East Midlands, Bournemouth and Humberside airports and serves some 28 million passengers every year.
