Passengers flying from London Heathrow Airport could be the first to use new paperless technology to travel to the US.
Continental Airlines has announced it will launch a new system that allows travellers to get their boarding passes sent to their mobile phones or PDAs, getting rid of the need for traditional paper tickets.
Having successfully offered the service to US customers, the carrier also hopes to boost security at Heathrow with the scheme.
Martin Hand, vice-president of reservations and ecommerce at Continental, said: "Customers have told us this is the type of product improvement they want and we will continue to expand the self-service technology to more of our domestic and international destinations."
The airline already offers the service at 42 airports, including Cleveland, New York and Houston, having first introduced it at Frankfurt Airport in late 2009.
Passengers are sent a barcode that can then be scanned straight from their personal device by airport staff.
London Heathrow Airport offers flights to 180 destinations in 90 countries.
