Bristol International Airport promoted to US travellersBy Nick Jones.

Bristol International Airport is being promoted as a holiday destination for US passengers, it has been reported.

Continental Airlines flights to the hub from New York are being supported by Destination Bristol, South West Tourism and Bath Tourism in a bid to further bolster the local economy.

Kirsty Cumming, head of marketing at South West Tourism, said that foreign visitors often visit the south-west in order to explore the history of the region.

"The south-west is a perfect destination with this in mind. We have four World Heritage sites along with an abundance of castles, forts and stately homes in addition to our literary connections," Ms Cumming said.

According to Explore England, some 200,000 American visitors injected £77 million into the UK economy in 2008.

In related news, a £150 million expansion of Bristol International Airport was recommended for approval by North Somerset Council planning officers last week.

The plans will be presented to the council's South Area Committee on Wednesday (March 3rd).
