Spanair to launch Birmingham routesBy Nick Jones.

Spanish carrier Spanair has announced it will begin its UK operation with new flights taking off from Birmingham International Airport this spring.

According to the airport, the carrier will launch flights from Birmingham to Barcelona on May 20th and to Madrid on 25th May.

The services will operate four and three times per week respectively and will be run by Airbus A320 aircraft.

Commenting on the Madrid service, Birmingham Airport chief executive Paul Kehoe said it was "a no-brainer for people wanting to reach Spain's capital city from this stretch of the country."

Mr Kehoe added: "We welcome the carrier to the Midlands and I encourage the region to support both routes."

The current bmibaby service from Birmingham Airport to Barcelona is set to end on June 7th.

Spanair has 16 codeshare agreements with airlines such as Lufthansa, Swiss, Air Canada and EgyptAir.

The company will also run flights from Edinburgh to Barcelona on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from May 21st.
