Newcastle Airport to close free drop-off area

Newcastle Airport will close the free-drop off area outside its terminal building, it has been reported.

According to the Chronicle, the passenger drop-off lay-by will be replaced by a car park three minute's walk from the building that offers 15 minutes of free parking, instead of the current five minutes.

The change will come into effect on April 26th and will continue until a new express car park has been constructed at the airport.

A Newcastle Airport spokeswoman told the newspaper: "From April 26th, the free parking period for picking up and dropping off passengers will be increased from five to 15 minutes - one of the most generous free parking periods available at any UK airport."

The new parking zone will also feature a taxi pick-up and set-down area, she added, while passengers with reduced mobility will be provided with assistance from their parking space to the terminal building.

Newcastle Airport is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year and will release a commemorative book in conjunction with the Chronicle.
