UK air space remains shut as volcanic eruption strengthens

Air traffic could be further delayed today (April 20th) as the volcanic eruption in Iceland continues, it has been reported.
National Air Traffic Services (Nats) reports that the eruption has strengthened during the last 12 hours, releasing a new ash cloud that is spreading towards the UK.
The organisation estimates that airports in Scotland could resume full service this morning, while airspace over England may open later today.
It is unlikely main southern air hubs like London Heathrow Airport will open today, Nats added.
The organisation expects to make another public statement at around 09:00 GMT and is consulting the government, airlines, the Civil Aviation Authority and the Met Office.
According to a Met Office report released yesterday, eruptions from the Eyjafjallajökull volcano had become weaker but were still launching ash up to 10,000 ft into the atmosphere.
Passengers hoping to travel to or from the UK by air should consult their airlines directly.
