Ash causes cancellations at Newcastle AirportBy Sam Lock.

Low cost carrier EasyJet was forced to cancel flights yesterday (May 9th) following a fresh cloud of volcanic ash in the region.

According to the Journal Live, the carrier cancelled services from Newcastle Airport to Paris and Rome after the ash gathered in the north-east.

Meanwhile, a Viking flight to Verona was transferred from the airport to Bristol, with passengers being transferred to the south-west via bus.

A statement on the airport's website read: "The vast majority of flights are expected to operate as normal, but EasyJet flights to and from Paris and Rome have been cancelled."

"We confirm that Newcastle Airport remains open for inbound and outbound flights," it added.

Ash is also currently affecting airports in Spain, Portugal and Italy, as well as western Ireland and northern Scotland.

National Air Traffic Services reports that no UK airports are currently experiencing cancellations, since the ash cloud has migrated to the north-west of the UK.
