Bristol Airport expansion backed by councilBy Mike Booth.

Local council officers have backed the expansion of Bristol Airport ahead of a committee meeting next week, it has been revealed.

North Somerset Council voted six to three in favour of the £150 million plan but referred the final decision to the planning and regulatory committee with 60 conditions, including restrictions on night flights.

On top of this, the council report also outlines the need for the airport to inject over £5 million into local transport links, as well as recommending a ten million limit on annual passenger numbers.

The application proposes the extension of Bristol Airport's terminal building from 21,000 sq m to 47,000 sq m, a new transport interchange and multi-storey car park, as well as extra security channels and check-in desks.

Around a fifth of the predicted additional energy requirements will come from on-site renewable sources, the airport states.

A spokesman for Bristol Airport added that the scheme could create 4,000 jobs and bring £340 million to the local economy.

The airport currently serves around 6.2 million passengers each year.

A final decision on the planning proposal is expected on Monday (May 24th).
