Jet2 launches first East Midlands Airport routeBy James Wilson

Low-cost carrier Jet2 launched its inaugural route from East Midlands Airport yesterday (May 19th).

According to the airline, the 757 service to Paphos illustrates its continued investment in the region.

The company also plans to begin five new routes for summer 2011, bring its total at East Midlands Airport to 14.

It is now offering flights to Alicante, Palma, Faro, Bodrum and Rhodes for travel from May 2011, with one-way fares beginning at £39.99 including tax and surcharges.

Jet2 managing director Ian Doubtfire commented: "We are now quite literally taking off in the Midlands, bringing low-fare flights to a whole host of popular destinations, as well as providing substantial employment opportunities within the travel and leisure industry."

East Midlands Airport commercial director Stephen Turner added that the launch of the Paphos route was "an exciting and historic day".

The airline predicts the new summer 2011 routes will create around 150 local jobs and offer an annual total of 300,000 seats for travel abroad.

Some 90 direct routes currently run from East Midland Airport.
