A pilot has suffered injuries after crash landing a helicopter at Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

The unnamed man sustained head injuries when the helicopter crashed during a training session at midday on Saturday (May 22nd).

While the airport's operations were not disrupted by the incident, five fire engines and two ambulances were called to the scene.

David Knowles, an eye witness to the crash, commented that the aircraft appeared to be hovering around 3m above ground before it hit the western edge of the airport.

Mr Knowles told BBC News: "The pilot came around, got out and looked very dazed. He said he was OK but there was a lot of blood down the back of his head and back."

The condition of the pilot is not known.

An investigation into the cause of the incident will be carried out by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.

Easyjet launched flights from Liverpool John Lennon Airport to the Isle of Man on Friday (May 21st).
