Stansted Airport second runway plans called offBy Sam Lock

Stansted Airport bosses have announced the withdrawal of their application to build a second runway at the hub.

According to managing director David Johnston, the withdrawal comes after the new coalition government announced clear plans to change policy on airports.

Mr Johnston said: "Stansted Airport is a key driver of economic growth in this part of England and we will continue to work hard to bring new business here and to work with our neighbours."

He added that the airport still believes new airport capacity is needed in the south-east "to strengthen the UK's international trading links".

The airport has also withdrawn its provision for assisted relocation under the homeowner support scheme but will still purchase eligible properties that have been marketed by their owners.

The scheme was originally set up to give local homeowners and businesses a chance to sell their properties before the second runway was constructed.

Stansted Airport currently offers flights to more than 160 international destinations.
