Teesside Airport For Sale.

20/12/2011

Durham Tees Valley Airport, to use it’s full title, is being put up for sale by the majority shareholders, Peel Airports Limited.

The company are also majority shareholders of Liverpool John Lennon and Doncaster Robin Hood. They own 75% of Durham Tees Valley airport, with the remaining 25% held by local authorities. Local MP’s have already begun campaigning to make sure the airport remains as an airport as a vital local resource. Passenger numbers at the airport have dropped dramatically in the wake of the financial crisis, from nearly 1 million in 2009 to an estimated 200,000 this year.

James Wharton, the Conservative MP for Stockton South said: "I have explained to Theresa Villiers the importance of Teesside airport to our sub-regional economy and my concerns about any sale that could eventually lead to closure. She, and the Department for Transport, are now aware of the situation and will be following matters closely. It is time for new investment and for the future success of this important facility to be taken seriously."

With the support of Government, it is unlikely that the airport will close. To book parking for Durham Tees Valley, click here.
