ETS Comes into Force.
02/01/2012
Despite the concerted efforts of non-EU airlines to stop it, the ETS (Emissions Trading Scheme) has come into force on ALL flights to and from the EU as of the 1st January, 2012.
The ETS has been enforced across other industries within the EU for some time, the scheme allocates a level of carbon emissions to each company, if they go over the set amount, they have to pay, but if they are likely to use less that their allocation then they can trade or sell some of their allowance. There has been a great deal of controversy over the move; from airlines within the EU and from further afield. American airlines, along with Continental United took their complaint to the European Court of Justice, but it was rejected. There were claims that the Chinese and Indian governments had told their carriers not to comply with data requests, but the European Commission has stood firm. The ETS should actually add a maximum of 2 - 3 Euros to the price of a ticket.
Most airports are actively engaged in reducing their carbon footprints, so to book airport parking for a ‘green’ holiday, click here.
