Birmingham Submits Plans For New Runway

Birmingham International Airport has formally submitted a planning application for the extension of its runway.

Officials delivered the planning document to Solihull Metropolitan Borough earlier this week.

The document sets out details including how a section of the A45 road will have to be diverted underground to make space for the new runway.

Joe Kelly, the airport's acting managing director, said: "The submission of our planning application to Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council represents a major step forward for the airport and the wider region.

"The connectivity that the runway extension could bring is vital for the future economic well being of the region and equally important to further establishing the region on the world stage."

Earlier this month, officials at the Midlands hub revealed that they were closing the old 'short runway' in preparation for the new one.

The hub's community relations officer, Sandra Wood, said at the time: "Our philosophy is to work with local communities on airport development, and we hope that the closure of [this] runway will reassure local residents that we will only continue to operate infrastructure that is really needed."
