BLACKPOOL AIRPORT PARKING NEWS - 28/11/2008
The chief executive of Blackpool Airport has tried to reassure members of the public over the future of the beleaguered facility.
In an online chat organised by the Blackpool Gazette, David Kershaw said that the airport will survive despite the recent announcement that Ryanair had decided to cancel its services in a row over a passenger tax.
Mr Kershaw told readers: "I genuinely believe the airport has a future, I am very passionate about Blackpool and Lancashire. I just think the future will be very different from the recent past."
When asked if events had signalled the beginning of the end for the regional hub, Mr Kershaw responded defiantly.
"This is not the end for the airport. It's a different future. First we have to replace the routes we have lost. Then we have to grow into new markets but we cannot do this without the support from Lancashire and beyond," he said.
Earlier this week Ryanair announced it would cancel flights to Blackpool Airport because of the introduction of a £10 passenger charge.
However, Jet2 followed this by pledging to support the ailing airport despite disagreeing with the increased costs.
Blackpool Airport handles services to a number of UK destinations as well as popular European holiday resorts, such as Tenerife, Rome and Alicante.
