Liverpool JLA Worried By Proposed Aviation Duty

The owners of Liverpool John Lennon Airport (JLA) have expressed concern over HM Treasury's proposed introduction of aviation duty.
Aviation duty is set to replace air passenger duty and will see fiscal revenue rising from £2 billion per year to £3.5 billion by 2012.
However, the Peel Airports Group (PAG) cited a recent report by the Civil Aviation Authority which found that air passenger duty is already one of the key contributors to the slowdown in the sector.
It acknowledged the need to ensure expansion of the UK aviation sector takes place at an environmentally-sustainable level, but insisted measures must be proportionate to their impact on climate change.
PAG insisted that introducing aviation duty would have a devastating impact on regional airports such as JLA, which it said play a crucial role in propping up local economies.
The International Air Transport Association also recently voiced its concerns over the plans, insisting the government was using the proposed duty as a cash cow.
